USDA FDA approved Phageguard S (PGS) for the control of Salmonella
''USDA FDA have given a green light''
The USDA FDA has approved Phageguard S (PGS) as a processing-aid in the production of Meat & Poultry products. Phageguard S is a Clean Label Intervention aimed at the prevention of Cross-contamination and the eradication of undesirable Salmonella bacteria present in the food product during the processing stage. The Phage-based solution is already GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) and has now received approval as a processing aid by the USDA.
No residual effects on the treated product
Mark Offerhaus, CEO of Micreos group: “Now that the FDA and USDA have given a green light, Phageguard can provide food processors a natural solution against Salmonella, including the cultures that are resistant to antibiotics. Phageguard S is seen as an elegant solution due to the fact that it only targets Salmonella. It also has no redisual effects on the treated product. Not flavor, taste nor texture. After successfully launching Phageguard L (PGL) against Listeria we have expanded our product range of green options against food pathogens. We expect the poultry industry to be the first big users of Phageguard S.”
Proven effectiveness
Phageguard S is highly effective at reducing Salmonella (up to 99%) as demonstrated in a challenge study by CFS (Certified Laboratories) in California. It may be used Post-slaughter in (pre-) chill systems or sprayed onto the foods at points of contamination during further processing. The product, and its application, can be integrated easily within the daily routine of the normal production process.
