Control of adulterant STEC serogroups on livestock hides

Applied phage technology to control adulterant STEC serogroups on livestock hides, such as cattle, prior to harvest. Phageguard E Hides+ (PGE Hides+) enables meat packers to control STEC O157:H7 and multiple non-O157 adulterant STEC serogroups, including O26 and O103, at the holding pens to prevent cross-contamination during harvest. PGE Hides+ holds USDA-FSIS approval for application on cattle, buffalo, bison, wisent, and goats, offering preharvest hide treatment for a wide range of meat packers to improve STEC management in postharvest processing.

Bacteriophages to control STEC serogroups at the holding pens

The USDA-FSIS has designated STEC serogroups O157, O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, and O145 as adulterants in beef products. PGE Hides+ effectively targets the five most prevalent STEC serogroups among these seven USDA-FSIS designated adulterants on livestock hides. At the same time, PGE Hides+ does not impact animal welfare (non-hazardous), affect equipment integrity (non-corrosive), or requires wastewater pretreatment.

PGE Hides+ is implemented at the holding pens, a critical control point (CCP) that's prone to STEC contamination, leading to increased risk of STEC transmission from hides to equipment and/or meat during harvest. Spray systems are strategically positioned and tailored to the pen layout, ensuring even distribution across the animal surface to minimize the risk of STEC cross-contamination during harvest.
