The National Food Safety Authority of Egypt (NFSA) has approved the use of Phageguard S (PGS) for Salmonella safety management systems in postharvest poultry production. Phageguard S, which has already been approved and implemented by multiple poultry processors in the United States (USDA and FDA) as a processing aid, successfully underwent the required series of evaluations and meetings.

Phageguard received official approval from the NFSA under Authority No. (1080) on August 28, 2023, authorizing the application of Phageguard S bacteriophage technology in poultry production. In collaboration with Middle Eastern partner, CJM Management Consultancy, Phageguard had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Elhouby, Chairman of the NFSA, to discuss the potential of Phageguard S in enhancing food safety systems for Salmonella control in Egyptian poultry facilities. The approval followed extensive research conducted with local industry experts and legislators, emphasizing the importance of this regulatory for poultry safety as live birds are widely recognized as a primary source of Salmonella transmission through their intestinal tracts.

With the approval, Egyptian poultry processors now have access to an additional tool to enhance their poultry production safety protocols while maintaining product quality.

The official letter of the National Food Safety Authority of Egypt for the approval of Phageguard S for Salmonella control in poultry production can be found below.
